Feb. 14, 2023

Ottawa, Ontario – Feb. 14, 2023 4-H Canada has recognized Shirley Barnable (Newfoundland and Labrador) as a lifetime Honourary Member for her contributions to the 4-H movement in Canada. The prestigious 4-H Canada Honourary Membership is bestowed upon individuals who have been dedicated and passionate contributors to the 4-H movement in Canada.

“Shirley Barnable has been an inspiration to the 4-H community,” said Shannon Benner, CEO of 4-H Canada. “We are proud to have Shirley join the ranks of prestigious Honourary Members who have dedicated so much time and energy to building the 4-H community in Canada.”

A name synonymous with the 4-H community across Newfoundland and Labrador, Shirley is the epitome of service that creates a lasting impact for the youth around her.

Shirley’s father was a farmer in the United States who often spoke highly of 4-H. When the family moved to Canada, Shirley joined the local 4-H club in Ferryland, NL, and eventually became president of the club before graduating from the program. Shirley’s involvement continued as a volunteer leader for 20 years in the iSullivan 4-H club, a multipurpose club offering a variety of projects throughout the year.

Shirley played an active role in executive changes in the Newfoundland and Labrador provincial 4-H organization and was elected as co-chair of the provincial council. Shirley also became chair for 4-H Newfoundland and Labrador, and in this capacity, helped advance the 4-H movement across Canada through her involvement with national committees, advising strategic planning, and helping develop national programs and resources.

Shirley has always been a hardworking mentor for youth, doing whatever she can to ensure their success. From planning for club meetings and provincial summer camps, to chaperoning trips across the country, she has been steadfast in her commitment to ensure youth are learning life-long skills to use in their community, country, and world.

Proudly sponsored by Farm Credit Canada, 4-H Canada’s Honourary Membership recognizes individuals who have embodied 4-H values through their life and have delivered outstanding services to one or more levels of the organization. Shirley Barnable becomes the 73rd person to be inducted as lifetime Honourary Members.

“On behalf of everyone at FCC, I want to congratulate Shirley Barnable on this well-deserved and prestigious honour,” said Todd Klink, FCC’s executive vice-president and chief marketing officer. “Shirley’s leadership in the 4-H organization, commitment to her community and dedication to fostering skills and character in the young people of 4-H exemplifies why the 4-H program is so valuable. She has clearly made a difference in the lives of many people.”

The award will be presented at 4-H Canada’s Leadership Awards, which will be held virtually Feb. 28, 2023. The organization’s signature event, the 4-H Canada Leadership Awards aims to showcase the achievements of leadership at every level of 4-H in Canada, while fundraising for the Canadian 4-H Foundation.
