2023-2024 Annual Report

Hugh Maynard, Interim Chief Executive Officer, 4-H Canada

David Hansen, Chair, 4-H Canada Board of Directors

Ben Graham, Chair, Canadian 4-H Foundation

Executive Letter

Throughout the history of 4-H in Canada there have been several constants – exceptional youth programming and extraordinary youth members, strong community support from parents, volunteers, and the broader agricultural community. And change.
Movements such as 4-H don’t go the distance without encountering change. In fact, throughout our 111-year history, we have constantly evolved. Our members ‘age out’ of our programming and younger members join, our volunteers come and go (though many of our volunteers last a lifetime!), and our programs change to reflect the world around us and the interests of our members.

This past year, however, we encountered more than just the normal amount of change.
Across the country we welcomed new members, new volunteers, and a full-scale return to post-pandemic, in-person participation. Nationally, we saw our engagement numbers grow substantially, and we launched new resources and outreach initiatives that diversify the areas of exploration open to the national 4-H community.

At the same time, we also experienced some challenges. As an organization, we arrived at a crossroads when we learned of substantive and unanticipated changes to the financial support from a major funder within weeks of learning that our CEO for the previous decade was moving on.

These changes have given our board of directors an opportunity to contemplate what the future of 4-H Canada, and 4-H in Canada, should look like and what it will take to get us there so that we do, indeed, grow stronger through change.

Thank you for your interest in 4-H in Canada..

The People

Youth Advisory Committee

The Youth Advisory Committee is made up of outstanding 4-H youth members who want to continue to play a role in, and contribute to, the growth of the 4-H movement in Canada. YAC members represent 4-H Canada at events and conferences and help drive the policy development and decision making of 4-H Canada. The Youth Advisory Committee meets regularly to make recommendations to 4-H Canada on programming, marketing, and communications, as well as policy development.

“Becoming a YAC member has opened up a world of opportunities for both personal growth and collaboration. Working alongside other YAC members, we've not only enhanced our own skills but also made concrete improvements to the 4-H program, ensuring its continued success for all members, present and future.” – Katie MacNeil

“Being on the YAC has immensely improved my self-confidence in both personal and professional settings. Having the ability to network, form connections and present yourself in a positive, capable manner can open so many doors for future opportunities, and something I have truly benefited from learning during my time with the Youth Advisory Committee.” – Kayla Emmerton
