4-H Canada Announces Recipients of Larry Milton Campbell Memorial 4-H Scholarship
Ottawa, ON, January 21, 2015 --- 4-H Canada is pleased to announce the recipients of the Larry Milton Campbell Memorial 4-H Scholarship, sponsored by the Canadian Meat Council.
The two 4-H members who will be receiving $2,500 in scholarship funding are:
• Christine Suominen (Lacombe, AB)
• Brooke McNeil (Hantsport, NS)
“I am incredibly honoured and thankful to be receiving the Larry Milton Campbell Memorial 4-H Scholarship,” said McNeil. “It will help me to pursue my wish to enroll in the Agricultural Campus of Dalhousie University for September 2015 to study the Animal Science degree program. I have a passion for animals, and this is definitely going to assist me in pursuing it.”
Suominen also expressed big plans for her scholarship funding, stating, “I am extremely grateful that I was chosen for this scholarship. I plan on attending the University of Lethbridge with an interest in continuing on to veterinarian studies. I would like to express my sincere thanks to the Canadian Meat Council for their continued support of 4-H. They are providing great opportunities for future leaders in agriculture.”
4-H Canada partnered up with the Canadian Meat Council to create the Larry Milton Campbell Memorial 4-H Scholarship in 2013. The goal of the scholarship is to provide funding to outstanding youth who are entering a Canadian university in a program related to Food, Meat, or Animal Science. By 2016, this three-year scholarship program will have distributed a total of $15,000 among six 4-H members.
4-H Canada was honoured to embark on this scholarship program initiative with the Canadian Meat Council because it commemorates the incredible commitment, vision, and leadership that was inherent in the late Campbell, who was an avid 4-H’er. After growing up on a farm near London, ON, Campbell went on to attend the Ontario Agriculture College, graduating in 1963. By 1967 he had joined the Canadian Meat Council, where he enjoyed a remarkable 38-year career before retiring in 2005.
Through their support of this scholarship, the Canadian Meat Council is honouring the memory of Campbell by helping 4-H Canada support Canadian youth in pursuing and meeting their educational goals.
“For over 100 years, 4-H Canada has been dedicated to supporting young leaders in reaching their full potential. Scholarships play a key role in the 4-H program, and would not be possible without the generous support of partners like the Canadian Meat Council,” explained 4-H Canada CEO Shannon Benner. “Together, 4-H Canada and the Canadian Meat Council are giving youth the opportunity to obtain the high-quality post-secondary education they deserve.”
“The Canadian Meat Council welcomes this opportunity to unite with 4-H Canada in recognizing and supporting two outstanding 4-H members who have demonstrated their commitment to the future sustainability of a strong livestock and meat sector in this country,” said Canadian Meat Council Executive Director, Jim Laws. “I am certain that Larry Campbell would have been very pleased to know that his life-long passion for this industry would be so capably carried forward into the decades to come,” added Laws.
