COVID-19 Update from 4-H Canada

Updated December 21, 2021

As communities across Canada continue to adjust to the challenges from the effects of COVID-19, 4-H Canada’s priority continues to be the health, safety, and security of our youth members, volunteer leaders, families, and the communities 4-H impacts.

We have worked hard since the onset of the pandemic to adapt and deliver existing programs as possible, and respond with resources that address the emerging needs of our 4-H community. 4-H Canada remains committed to delivering fun, inclusive, and relevant programming to our 4-H youth and leaders, to supporting the 4-H community, and to working in partnership with our provincial 4-H organizations, partners, and stakeholders as we continue to empower youth leaders.

4-H Canada Requirements & Recommendations on COVID-19 Vaccinations

4-H Canada Vaccine Requirement

As we look ahead to returning to in-person programming in 2022, 4-H Canada remains committed to providing a safe and healthy environment. Therefore, the 4-H Canada Board of Directors has adopted a requirement that all national program delegates (joining in-person) are required to be fully vaccinated* against COVID-19, regardless of their province of residence. This requirement has been implemented due to the nature of air travel, provincial requirements, and the health guidelines of the venues in which we operate.

*Fully vaccinated against COVID-19 means that a person has received the full series of a vaccine authorized in Canada at least 14 days prior to travelling and participating at an in-person event.

4-H COVID-19 Vaccination Recommendation

In addition to the national vaccine requirement, the 4-H Canada Board of Directors have adopted a 4-H COVID-19 Vaccination Recommendation, which strongly supports and encourages everyone in the 4-H community to become fully vaccinated.

The 4-H COVID-19 Vaccination Recommendation is intended to support regional ownership of decisions regarding the implementation of a COVID-19 vaccination requirement. 4-H Canada is fully supportive of 4-H provincial organizations making their own decisions regarding COVID-19 vaccinations, and understands that situations, programs, and pandemic restrictions and requirements vary by province.

A driving factor in the 4-H COVID-19 Vaccination Recommendation for all eligible volunteers and participants is a strong desire to offer safe, in-person programming in recognition of the COVID-19 mental health impacts on youth. We have also considered the significant uptake of COVID-19 vaccinations across Canada, and the increasing public health and venue vaccination requirements.

For more information regarding the 4-H Canada COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement or Recommendation, please contact Carrie McElroy, Risk Management and Accreditation Director at For information or questions regarding vaccination requirements for 4-H events at the provincial level, please refer to your 4-H provincial organization website, or contact your 4-H provincial office.

Provincial and Local Programming Updates

We are continuing to work closely with our provincial 4-H organizations and consulting with public health officials, government partners, and stakeholders to ensure any in-person programming is conducted only where appropriate, while adhering to public health guidelines and protecting the safety of everyone involved.

As provincial governments vary in their respective level of restrictions, local and provincial in-person 4-H programming may resume and/or be paused under provincial health and safety guidelines. Please contact your provincial 4-H office for more information on the status of 4-H programming where you live.
