4-H Canada to Send Five 4-H’ers to Canada-Wide Science Fair

Ottawa, Ontario – March 13, 2018 – 4-H Canada is thrilled to announce the winners of our third annual 4-H Canada Science Fair, recently selected by a panel of 12 judges at the annual event in Truro, Nova Scotia. The five winners will move on to the Canada-Wide Science Fair taking place in Ottawa, Ontario from May 12‒19, 2018.

With the generous support of Bayer – 4-H Canada’s Science & Technology pillar partner – 18 talented 4-H members traveled to Truro from across Canada for a chance to share their work and earn top honours. A total of 14 innovative projects were presented, ranging in topics from analyzing the growth of microgreens to a look into a cost-effective manner of extracting chitin and chitosan from lobsters.

“We are incredibly proud of all those who participated in the 4-H Canada Science Fair. With the support of Bayer, 4-H will continue to play an active role in engaging young people in STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics,” said Shannon Benner, 4-H Canada CEO. “Congratulations to everyone who took part in the event hosted by Dalhousie’s Faculty of Agriculture. All of 4-H in Canada will be watching as our winners move to the next stage of competition at the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Ottawa.”

The names of the winners are as follows:

  • Mac D.  (British Columbia)
    Project “Safer Chick-ments”

“The high-quality and innovative projects that were submitted demonstrate the tangible impact the 4-H Science & Technology program is having in developing strong leaders in STEM,” said Sesh Iyengar, Director, Regulatory Science for Bayer Canada, and 4-H Science Fair judge. “It was inspiring to witness the curiosity, passion and energy that went into all 14 projects, and how these youth are approaching the challenges set before them.”

The 4-H Canada Science Fair is part of 4-H Canada’s ongoing commitment to furthering science and technology skills and knowledge development for youth through 4-H programming. Together, 4-H Canada and Bayer are working to develop responsible, caring and contributing Canadian youth in the field of science and technology.
