4-H Canada announces the mentors to the recipients of the 2018 Leadership Excellence Awards of Distinction
Ottawa, Ontario – February 7, 2019 – 4-H Canada is proud to announce the list of esteemed mentors for the 2018 Leadership Excellence Awards of Distinction (L.E.A.D.) recipients. Every year, 4-H Canada matches its L.E.A.D. recipients with a respected industry or community leader to mentor them as they navigate their post-secondary education and early career choices.
As one of the leading positive youth development organizations in Canada, 4-H Canada’s L.E.A.D. scholarship includes mentorship as an essential part of the program in helping guide these outstanding young people towards fulfilling their goals and career path. Building responsible, caring and contributing youth with the support of mentors is at the core of 4-H Canada’s values and pairing the L.E.A.D. recipients with established and successful pioneers is an extension of those principles.
The scholarship recipients are matched with mentors based on 4-H Canada’s four leadership development pillars that are in line with the interests and career goals of each L.E.A.D. recipient.
The mentors to the 2018 L.E.A.D. recipients are:
Community Engagement & Communications recipient McAuley Bellows has been matched with Ian Thompson, Executive-in-Residence at the Atlantic Canadian law firm, Cox & Palmer. McAuley is studying business administration at Memorial University with a career goal of becoming a lawyer.
Science & Technology recipient Emma Kaliel has been paired with Erin Thorp, professional engineer, certified coach and published author. Emma is studying engineering at the University of Alberta to attain a career in the same field.
Environment & Healthy Living recipient Audrey Morneau has been matched with Crystal Mackay, president of the Canadian Centre for Food Integrity. Audrey is studying farm management technology at McGill University with dreams to run her family’s farm.
Sustainable Agriculture & Food Security recipient Emmett Sawyer has been paired with Bill Buckner, former Senior Vice-President at Cargill Inc. Emmett is studying agriculture at the University of Lethbridge with a career goal to become the president of an agricultural company and to later pursue a career in federal politics.
“A mentor nurtures someone’s potential, they are an experienced and trusted advisor,” said David Hovell, Chair of the 4-H Canada Board of Directors. “The values and benefits of mentorship are at the core of 4-H programming. We are very proud and excited to announce this prestigious group of mentors and thank them for their commitment to support these outstanding L.E.A.D. recipients.”
4-H Canada is proud to partner with CN in offering this distinguished award and is grateful for their support of youth in rural communities across Canada.
